WIESBADEN โ In 2021, private households in Germany spent an average of 2,623 euros per month on their consumption. That was 4.6% or EUR 116 more than in 2020 (EUR 2,507). As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of current economic accounts, private consumer spending exceeded the level of 2019 (EUR 2,574) after the decline in the first Corona year of 2020. With the exception of transport, households spent more money in all areas in 2021 than in the previous year. However, some areas of spending remained below pre-Corona levels. Overall, private consumer spending increased slightly more in 2021 than consumer prices, which had risen by 3.1% on average in 2021 compared to 2020.
At 37% (2019: 35%), spending on housing continued to account for the largest share of consumer spending in private households in 2021. As in previous years, expenditure on food, beverages and tobacco products had the second largest share at 15% (2019: 14%). The share for transport expenditure was still in third place with 12% (2019: 14%). Spending on leisure, entertainment and culture took fourth place at 10% (2019: 11%), as in the pre-Corona year. Expenditure on interior design, household appliances and objects followed in fifth place at 6% (2019: 5%). They have moved up one position compared to 2019. In 2019, spending on catering and accommodation services was in fifth place with a share of 6%. Their share of total consumer spending in 2021 was still below the pre-corona level at 4% of total consumer spending. Meanwhile, the share of healthcare spending in 2021 was around 4%, as in previous years.
